    Smart City uses technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT) or Big Data to collect and analyses data in real time. This data is used to improve the management of resources and public services.

  • Energy Efficiency

    They focus on reducing carbon emissions. They make use of renewable energy, such as solar energy, to generate electricity and heat in a sustainable way. In addition, they have energy management systems to improve consumption and reduce energy waste.

  • Sustainable Mobility

    Promoting the use of efficient public transport, non-polluting means of transport, and intelligent systems are integrated into traffic management.

  • Waste Management

    They use smart waste collection systems that allow planning collection routes and detect full containers to prevent overflow.

  • Electronic Administration

    It develops technologies that improve the efficiency of the Public Administration. For example, mobile applications or websites that allow access to public services in a more intuitive way.

  • Smart Security and Surveillance

    Such as the installation of smart surveillance cameras, facial recognition systems and real-time data analysis.

  • Citizen Participation

    Online platforms and mobile applications are used to allow citizens to express their opinions, report problems in the city or collaborate in the improvement of public services.

What role do renewable energies play in Smart Cities?

Renewable energies make it possible to generate clean, sustainable and decentralised energy.

Solar Energy

Solar energy is one of the most widely used renewable energy sources in Smart Cities. Installing hybrid solar panels on buildings and public areas generates clean energy that reduces dependence on fossil fuels. Smart solar energy management systems are also used to improve energy production and consumption.

Wind Energy

Wind energy is another important source of renewable energy in Smart Cities. Wind turbines in urban and rural areas harness the wind and generate electricity. In addition, these turbines are integrated into the city’s infrastructure and are intelligently managed to maximize energy production.

Hydroelectric Power

They are very useful when demand increases or when renewable energy sources are not available.

What examples of Smart Cities do we have in Spain?

In Spain, Barcelona is an example of Smart City.

In 2015 it took the title of the smartest city, and since 2012 it has been trying to apply new technologies that improve the quality of its citizens’ life.

Some examples are the use of advanced technology for waste management, public transport, lighting, or parking, among others.
