A new study led by Duke University concludes that 153 million premature deaths related to air pollution could be prevented.
The highest rates in lives saved will be in Asia and Africa.
This all makes sense as long as governments accelerate their timetable for reducing fossil fuel emissions.
This study tells the number of lives that could be saved by cities, the 154 of the world’s largest urban areas, if nations reduce their CO2 emissions.
Limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Kolkata and Delhi in India top the list of cities that will benefit from emissions reductions saving up to 4.4 million projected lives and 4 million estimated lives saved.
A further 13 Asian or African cities could each avoid more than 1 million premature deaths.
Three scenarios were used to carry out the study:
1.- Accelerated emission reductions and almost no negative emissions for the rest of the 21st century.
2.- This scenario envisaged higher emissions in the short term, but limited global warming to 2 degrees Celsius.
3- And the third short-term scenario reduces emissions to reach a maximum global warming of 1.5 degrees above the current value.

Do you know that…
Did you know that carbon dioxide (CO2) is a gas that occurs naturally in the atmosphere, but that anthropogenic emissions (caused by human activity) have significantly increased its concentration in recent decades? CO2 emissions come mainly from the combustion of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas to produce energy, as well as from industrial processes and deforestation.
CO2 is a greenhouse gas, which means that it absorbs and retains some of the heat emitted by the Earth, playing a crucial role in maintaining the planet's temperature. However, high levels of CO2 in the atmosphere increase the greenhouse effect and contribute to global warming, causing impacts such as melting ice, rising sea levels, extreme weather events and changes in ecosystems.
Controlling and reducing CO2 emissions is therefore essential to mitigate the effects of climate change and preserve the global environment in the long term.
