Discover the grants and subsidies for renewable energies in Spain

In order to support companies and industries in their ecological transition, while achieving the decarbonisation objectives set by the European Union’s 2030 Agenda, the European Union, the Spanish Government and the different communities have implemented different grants and subsidies… To help you find your way around and research, here is an overview of the various grants available.
IDEA grants and subsidies (2021-2023)
The active subsidies for the period 2021-2023 come from the Next Generation European Union plan, and are managed in Spain, through the IDAE, by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.
The autonomous communities are ultimately responsible for administering these aids, while the municipalities also offer discounts on the IBI and ICIO that make it even more profitable to start consuming your own solar energy.
Here is a list of the differents grants and subsidies:
Grants and subsidies from the Government of Spain
The Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has launched two grants for pilot projects of energy communities (CE IMPLEMENTA programme), endowed with 40 million euros, which will promote social innovation and citizen participation in renewables, energy efficiency or electric mobility. The BOE publishes the two calls for grants, whose deadline for submitting applications will begin on February 1 and will remain open for one month, until March 1.
The CE-IMPLEMENTA programme aims to promote more than 40 innovative initiatives in energy communities through two calls. The first allocates 10 million euros to small-sized projects, with which it is expected to promote more than 21 innovative initiatives, while the second contemplates 30 million euros to boost almost twenty medium-sized or large-sized projects. In the call for small projects, the investment may not exceed one million per project, while in the second all must exceed that investment.
The Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE) will be in charge of managing these grants, which will be awarded on a competitive basis and will cover up to 60% of the eligible costs of the project. This competition will prioritise, on the one hand, multi-component and innovative projects, i.e. those that integrate installations of different natures, combining renewable electrical and thermal energies, energy efficiency, sustainable mobility and/or demand management, in order to encourage the adoption of solutions in sectors that are more difficult to decarbonise. On the other hand, special importance will be given to the social and gender impact of energy communities, the inclusion of vulnerable consumers as partners or members and the development of projects in municipalities with demographic challenges and in those included in the Just Transition agreements.
Eligible projets
Those legal entities, public or private, that promote the participation in the energy sector of actors that have not traditionally participated in it, through projects in five areas of action, may benefit from the aid:
In the area of renewable electrical energies, actions associated with biomass, biogas or other renewable gases, wind, hydro and photovoltaic solar will be eligible. In thermal renewables, aid is contemplated for projects with aerothermal energy, biomass, biomethane, geothermal, hydrothermal and solar thermal.
In the field of energy efficiency, the improvement of the thermal envelope is included. Sustainable mobility projects, such as the acquisition of electric vehicles and the implementation of charging infrastructures, are also eligible for subsidies.
Finally, in terms of demand-side management, subsidies for behind-the-meter storage, new use of vehicle batteries (second life of batteries) or demand flexibility services are contemplated.
The eligible costs include administrative or management costs for the application and justification of the aid, the development of technical projects, the costs of drafting the specifications and those of executing the works, as well as investment in equipment and materials.
The aid will be granted through a non-refundable subsidy, t will be definitively received by the beneficiary once the execution of the project has been verified and the investment is certified. In order to facilitate the financing of the projects, 80% of the aid granted may be advanced.
