Energy efficiency in the home refers to how energy is used in relation to the performance of the dwelling. It is assessed through the Energy Performance Certificate, which assigns a rating from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient). A house with an A, B or C rating is more efficient and consumes less energy than the average, while houses with a rating of D to G tend to have higher energy consumption and require improvements.

Given that homes in Spain consume around a fifth of all the energy in the country and many homes have low ratings, it is important to improve the energy efficiency of our homes. From Abora Solar, we give you 10 ideas to achieve this.

Mejorar el aislamiento térmico de una pared

1. Improve thermal insulation

Good thermal insulation is essential to maintain the interior temperature without the need for excessive use of air conditioning systems. The External Thermal Insulation System (EIFS) is an effective option that improves energy efficiency by insulating the facades from the outside. Good insulation will reduce your energy consumption in both winter and summer.

2. Renew windows

An old window can cause significant heat loss. Replace old windows with models with double glazing and frames designed to break the thermal bridge. It is also useful to lower the blinds at night during the winter and raise them during the day to take advantage of the sunlight.

3. Upgrade your air-conditioning system

Make sure your heating and air conditioning systems are well maintained. Clean filters regularly and bleed radiators. Consider replacing older systems with energy-efficient boilers that reduce CO2 emissions and energy consumption.

4. Opt for renewable energies

The installation of hybrid solar panels, aerothermal systems or geothermal air conditioning can reduce conventional energy consumption. These options make use of natural resources and generate long-term savings.

5. Replace old appliances

Old appliances are often less efficient. Replace them with new models with high energy efficiency labels. For example, when buying a refrigerator or washing machine, choose those with the best energy rating.

6. Install water-saving systems

To reduce water consumption, install taps and cisterns with water-saving systems, such as double pulse for cisterns and single lever taps. These devices can reduce water consumption without affecting their functionality.

7. Insulate pipes and hot water systems

Proper insulation of hot water pipes and systems can prevent heat loss and improve efficiency. Ensure that both the system and pipes are properly insulated to maximise energy savings.

8.Use thermostatic valves

Thermostatic valves on radiators allow more precise control of the temperature in each room, avoiding wasted energy. This setting contributes to greater efficiency and reduced consumption.

Aprovechar la luz natural

9. Take advantage of natural light

Good orientation of your home and proper use of sunlight can improve energy efficiency. Open curtains during the day to take advantage of natural light and use light colours on walls and ceilings to reflect light better.

10. Consider the colour of the façade and roof

The colour of the facade and roof influences the amount of heat absorbed by the house. In warmer climates, lighter colours reflect heat better, while in colder areas, darker colours can help retain heat.

Taking these measures into account can make your home more efficient, reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions, as well as helping you to save on your bills.

Do you know that…

Did you know that buildings account for approximately 40% of total energy consumption worldwide? Implementing energy efficiency measures in buildings, such as proper insulation, installing efficient heating and cooling systems, or using LED lighting, not only significantly reduces operating costs, but can also reduce CO₂ emissions and contribute to a more sustainable environment. Small changes can have a big impact!
